Welcome 6th- and 7th-Grade Students to Room 311's website!

This website is for my homeroom, 311 (6A), as well as for students in all of the classes I teach. Students in my sixth and seventh reading and writing classes will find much of what they need to know right here.

I hope the site will become a dynamic place, more than just a listing of assignments coming due. I'd like to see the site become a student place: a place to access the resources you need, the information you want, and the work you produce.

If you're looking for grade-level specific information, click on "Classroom News" to the left.

If you're looking for resources, such as a rubric or graphic organizer, click on "My Resources" to the left.

If you don't find what you are looking for here, let me know. In other words, ask questions. Asking questions is a very, very important part of your learning. It's how you take control of your learning and drive the process. Please don't ever be afraid or hesitant to ask a question.

For those of you who are new to my classroom, here's a bit about me:

  • I'm starting my third year of teaching at Nettelhorst — all three years as a middle school reading and writing teacher — but I've been teaching since the mid-1990s. I taught English as a Foreign Language in Tokyo, Japan for 10 years.
  • I've been married forever to my best friend, and together we're the parents of two great kids: Dane and M, who are also Nettelhorst students.
  • I'm a small-town girl. I grew up long ago in place called Watertown, South Dakota, which I still think of as home, though it's been ages since I've actually lived there. Since leaving Watertown and settling in Chicago, I've moved about 33 times. That's a lot!
  • I was a reluctant reader all through elementary school and junior high. In fact, I pretty much couldn't read until I was 15. During my kindergarten through 3rd grade years, my school participated in an experimental reading program. It was called ITA, short for the Initial Teaching Alphabet. It was great for those first few years, but I was pretty much adrift from 4th grade on in terms of reading. The transition to our regular alphabet was just too much for me. Thank goodness for Nancy Drew! Nancy and her friends captured my imagination the summer I turned 15, and I've been reading ever since.
  • I usually say reading is my favorite pastime, but I actually have another favorite: traveling. To be more specific: bicycle traveling. I've been extremely fortunate to have traveled by bicycle, in some really great places, for about a year and a half. Someday I'll get to finish that trip and see the rest of the world.
  • I have high expectations, of myself and others. I believe it's very important to work (and play) to our fullest capability and to always try.
  • I believe we're going to have a great year! We have fun and interesting things to study in Language Arts, and we have so many great things going on in the middle school. How can it not be a great year?
Just before school started this fall, Principal Wulbert asked all of the teachers to complete a brief biography. I've also attached it here if you're interested. As they say in Japan, Gambate kudasai! Loosely translated that means "Let's all do our best! Good luck!"
