7th Grade and Mayor Emanuel

Welcome to Mr. Merel's Social Studies Page!

Announcements

All Students
  • History Fair Checkpoint #3 is this week. Please be prepared, this project has a way of sneaking up on you when you least expect it...
  • And if you did not get the chance to meet with me or you missed points during our individual sessions, please make an appointment during one of these times to stay on track: before school, lunch/recess, or after school. Your grade = your responsibility.
7th Grade
  • Constitution Review Session at 8:15AM and continuing every Thursday until the completion of the unit (most likely on March 1). If you would like more help, I am always available for individual tutoring sessions by appointment. Let me know!
  • Senator Kirk had a stroke...crazy. Read up on all the news: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/01/23/sen-kirk-suffers-stroke-office-announces/
  • I just read The Hunger Games and wow, what a great book! I'm finished with Catching Fire and I liked that one a bunch, too! Happy to chat about it so feel free to email me your thoughts and questions...and who would I be in the story? Peeta? Gale? Cato? President Snow? Who would you be? I'd love to know...just don't tell me I'd be Haymitch!
 6th Grade
  • Has anyone read The Red Pyramid or The Throne of Fire by Rick Riordan? Holy cow! I'd love to chat about how awesome this series is...hit me up!

Who is Mr. Merel?

I have nine years of teaching experience and all nine years are in my favorite subject: social studies! I earned a degree in history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (go Badgers!) and my master's degree in secondary education at National-Louis University. I taught for six years for CPS at Jahn Elementary School and three years at the University of Chicago Charter Schools-Carter G. Woodson Middle School. My students taught me as much as I taught them and I sure hope to have the same wonderful experiences here, too!

Please know this website will be updated as often as possible. I'll do my best to keep students and families informed of homework, projects, school-wide events, and anything else that comes up. Be sure to check the site often, especially the Calendar and Homework features, and if you don't find something then please let me know. I'm very open to suggestions for improvement so if you can think of a better way to do something I'm all ears!

If you have any questions about the work we do in or out of class, please contact me at: jimerel@cps.edu
