Read below for info on soliciting items for our upcoming school auction/fundraiser. Enjoy the weekend! 1/22/12 The newsletter is here. Also, please take a moment to consider soliciting items for this year's auction. Ask local vendors, friends, and family for donation items to be put up for auction. Items are due by February 24th- to the main office or contact our very own Shreya Gupta (Shaylan's mom) at sg0906@yahoo.com with questions or concerns. For all paperwork and details, go to http://www.nettelhorst.org/getinvolved.cfm?subpage=579806 Happy Sunday! 1/16/12 Here is the newsletter, everyone. Now get out and play in the snow! :) 1/6/12 Happy New Year, families! The newsletter for next week is now posted. Also, a few reminders from Principal Wulbert's News: Worlds of Wisdom and Wonder Programs (as advertised in Chicago Parent Magazine) Unique and challenging programs for bright and talented youth Pre-K – 8. Chicago/Lakeview program is at Nettelhorst School. Dates: February 26, March 4, 11, 18, and March 25 (Sunday afternoon programs) Character Counts 2nd Quarter Assembly will be February 7th at 9:15 am, in the auditorium. If your child is nominated for recognition in this ceremony, you will receive an invite to the assembly next week. 12/18/11 Here is the news for the week. I'll keep the new Reading Log format here too, though it really is the responsibility of the kids to grab a fresh Log every Monday. Feel free to print extras off, though, if you'd like some for practice. See you tomorrow! 12/10/11 The news is up and posted. Try to stay warm this weekend! :) Ms. Lennard 12/4/11 Hi Families. The newsletter is posted, along with the new Reading Log format that will be coming home with the kids tomorrow. Go Bears! 11/27/11 The newsletter for this week is posted. See you tomorrow! 11/19/11 Hope everyone is enjoying this windy fall day. Take time to read the newsletter which is now posted. 10/30/11 Here is the news for the week. Hope people had fun at the Halloween Hoopla- it looked like a blast from up above in the classroom. :) 10/23/11 I have fresh air blowing in all my windows, sunshine lighting up the room, and a warm, sleeping cat at my side. What a lovely Sunday! The newsletter is posted, and here are a few reminders for the week to come: 1. There's no school for kids on Friday- it's a Professional Development day for teachers. 2. Our school is collecting Box Tops! Take time to go through the pantry and cut off all those squares. Each box top is worth 10 cents for our school! Count by tens as you go, and send the box tops in with your child, or stick in the box on the counter in the office. 3. We are looking forward to our visit from the Farm Truck tomorrow. Thanks to all families who turned in their permission slips and money already. If you have not done so yet, send everything in first thing tomorrow morning. 4. Thanks to our classroom volunteers, Nicole (Neala's mom), and Andy (Joan's dad), Scholastic book orders will be getting prepared this week, and coming home next week. Look out for them! 5. Thanks to all our pencil sharpening and cricket buying families, as well! You help our room run smoothly. There is still a sign up sheet outside of the classroom if you would like to be worked into the rotation of either one of these volunteer opportunities. 6. Classroom directories are almost to press, thanks to Susan (Thomas's mom). Look for a directory coming home this week. Please inform me ASAP if you see any errors. 10/16/11 Hope everyone enjoyed the weekend. On Saturday, I ran my first 5K: Pumpkins in the Park. So much fun, and such beautiful weather for it! A few important thoughts... 1. Still looking for a Scholastic book ordering parent volunteer. Please email me directly if you are interested. I'll wait another week, and then turn things over to the 10 for 10 committee. 2. In response to the science letter last week, lots of kids brought in rocks last week. We have converted our windowsills to a rock museum. There is still time to bring in special rocks to display in our classroom during this science unit. 3. Students Xpress is a CPS writing magazine that published student work from a collection of five CPS schools. The main topic for this coming entry is "What is special about me?" Your child is welcome to submit writings or drawings, and I'll pass them on to Rachel Switall, the parent coordinator of this magazine. Please have submissions turned in to me by October 27th. Have fun with this...use creative approaches like poetry, songs, collages, personal narratives, or something original. 4. There are some random volunteer opportunities still open for parents...pencil sharpeners, cricket and mealworm helpers, and more. If you are interested, please sign up on the sheets outside our classroom. 5. Don't forget to read the weekly newsletter! Our cross country team got soaked last week. That didn't stop Kwesi from crossing the finish line in first place! 10/12/11 Shout-out for a Scholastic Book volunteer. The job involves pulling and collating Scholastic magazine pages, collecting orders/payments, inputting orders (online), sending payments, and sorting/distributing books upon arrival. There is a bit of work involved, but it's not hard to do. We will be doing a Scholastic book order every few months. If you are interested in this job, please email me directly asap. Also, please be aware that there is an ongoing shout-out for small, live crickets. The Petco up the street (Barry and Halsted) sells them. I'm there so often, I think the staff is getting sick of me! Our class gecko, Smalls, is very cute, but still growing. Crickets always help! :) If you are up for being a "Cricket Helper", please email me and let me know so we don't end up with too many crickets all at once. Thank you!! 10/10/11 What a beautiful weekend! Please take time reading through the newsletter...there's tons of really important information. Look out for the Optional Homework sheet, volunteer info, and more. If you have not yet filled out your info for our classroom directory, please do so ASAP! The form is here on the website. 10/2/11 Happy fall, everyone! Some important information: -
The Newsletter is now posted here on the website. You will notice it has a very specific theme this week. Teachers are talking about behavior (in and out of the classroom) lately, and it seemed like something that needed some time and attention this week. Please read this Newsletter carefully, and see what you can apply to your kids in the weeks to come. -
The First and Second Grade Field Trip schedule is also posted. If you have a fantastic idea that you don't see on it, feel free to email me with suggestions. We love our field trips!! -
There is a brand new monthly Homework Chart format starting Monday. We will explore it as a class on Monday. -
In order to support Monday night homework this month (which aims to get kids more and more comfortable with our Handwriting paper), a new sleeve will be entering folders on Monday, with explicit directions on how the paper is to be used. Handwriting paper (which we use for all writing in the classroom) will also be entering folders. PLEASE KEEP THIS PAPER IN THE FOLDERS- every few weeks, I will be pulling all papers out, and checking through work as a packet. -
You will also find an Optional Homework sheet in your child's folder. Keep this sheet at home, look through it, complete sections, if you wish, at your own pace. This is not required. 9/25/11 Alright, folks. I have made my first attempt at getting this website reorganized and more accessible. All newsletters, as well as important documents/forms, can be found under the "Classroom Newsletter" icon to the left, which has been renamed "Classroom Newsletter and Important Documents". I will keep this Home Page as a place only for updates and quick bits of info. All attachments will be under the icon named above. Also, I have converted all documents to PDF format. I hope this is better for people. If not, please let me know as soon as possible. Finally, at this time, I have not been able to access anything sent to me through the "Messages" icon on this website. Email me directly if you want to get in touch: alexa739@hotmail.com. This week's newsletter is up, as well as all the documents and forms sent home on Curriculum Night. Good Night! Good Morning. I have had a few parents let me know that they are having trouble opening documents here on the website. I will be taking time this weekend to: -convert all files to PDF's (I think this is the most accessible document format) -reorganize the website a bit (so that files are in places that make more sense than just having them all thrown together here on the Home Page) -making an email list of all the families in our room, so that every time I update the website, I can send an email blast off to everyone as a reminder to go check. Hope this will help us use this tool in better ways. Happy weekend! *The newsletter is now posted for the week.* 9/18/2011 Hi Families! Over the weekend, I moved our greatly-anticipated class pets into our classroom...two striped tiger geckos! For now, we will be rotating the geckos between our class and Ms. Holzwarth's class every few weeks. However, the word on the street is that geckos are solitary creatures, and typically do not live in pairs. So, each classroom may soon have one gecko of their own. On the topic of geckos, I have a huge favor to ask. Is anyone making a trip to Petsmart or Petco today or tomorrow morning? Our geckos eat live crickets, and we are in need! If you think you could make a quick cricket run today or tomorrow, please email me directly asap. There is a Petco within walking distance of school (Barry and Halsted). Thanks for your help, in advance. Looking forward to seeing everyone at Curriculum Night on Thursday. This week's newsletter will be posted up here by tonight. Enjoy the rainy Sunday! 9/15/2011 Well parents, the lice has struck throughout our building, and in our classroom as well! I just got home from Walgreens equipped with a variety pack of lice shampoo, combing gel, combs, and tea tree oil. Mrs. Murphy found some nits (eggs) in my hair after school. I know, it's truly horrible. Head to your closest Walgreens/CVS, and get yourself a nit comb and some lice-zapping product. There are also some all-natural options at Whole Foods. The only way to truly check for the eggs (the bugs are usually too fast to catch), is to wet your childs hair, and comb through every last bit with a tiny nit comb. The nits are whitish in color, oval shaped, and are actually glued on to the side of the hair shaft...typically along the lower hairline (by the neck), and behind the ears. But, they can be anywhere and everywhere. If any nits are found on your child, the shampoo treatment should be done for everyone in the family, and get the laundry rolling on high heat! In order to eliminate this bugger from spreading around and around, check for nits daily, put your girls in tight buns, and get some tea tree oil to line the hairline with daily. I promise to spray down the room and lockers with tea tree oil daily, and I will check the kids every morning. I think we caught it soon, and hopefully we can get it out fast! Feel free to email me with questions...there are a lot of myths out there. Also, it's not cheap, but the Hair Fairies are experts on this matter. I have an appointment with them tomorrow afternoon. :) Good luck! 9/11/2011 What a lovely weekend! This week's newsletter is now posted. I have also posted a family letter about Social Studies, as well as a document explaining some details about folders, and how they are used. See you bright and early. 9/8/2011 It's hard to believe that our first week is almost over. Thanks to everyone for taking time this week to fill out all the forms that have come home. I have had such a great time reading through the family inventories- what a nice way to get to know a little more about everyone. I will have the kids leave their folders at school over this weekend, so I can start adding sections that the kids will begin to use for Homework next week. I hope everyone is taking time to read every night...and also to sleep! See you tomorrow. 9/7/2011 We've had a great first two days of first grade in room 214! All of the documents that came home in folders over the past two days are now up on this website- either here on the Home Page, or on the Classroom Newsletter page. Welcome to Ms. Lennard's Website Hello everyone! I'm just starting to put this website together, so look out for new additions in the coming days. I'm really excited to have a place for families to come together to explore, inquire, and communicate. I'm looking forward to a great year! Below is an updated supply list, specific to Room 214. If you have not yet bought supplies for the year, shop from this list. Thank you! :) Ms. Lennard
